•      The king of asuras, hiranyakashipu had earned a boon that made him gain five special powers. He told everyone to worship him, but his son Prahlada disagreed and devoted Lord Vishnu. Because of this hiranyakashipu gave cruel punishments to his son Prahlada. 
•      Hiranyakashipu enlisted the help of his sister, Holika to kill his son. In an attempt to burn Prahlada, Holika sat with him on a pyre while wearing a cloak that protected her from the fire. 
•       Instead, the cloak protected Prahlada and burned Holika. Later that night Vishnu succeeded in killing hiranyakashipu. On the night before Holi , a large pyre is lit to celebrate this occasion.

•     Ramadan is the holy month of fasting as ordained by the Quran for all Muslims who have reached puberty and who are able to keep it, and it is the fourth pillar of Islam.
•      It falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and according to the Quran has been decreed to encourage all Muslims to be pious and charitable. 
•      Muslims and non-muslims alike recognize Ramadan as the most significant and holy time of the Islamic calendar.
•      During the ninth month of the lunar year, Muslims around the world refrain from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset, and they use their free time to recite the Quran and strengthen their bond with Allah. This is common knowledge for those of the Islamic community. 

BEGINNING OF RAMZAN:

•      To understand how Ramazan became such an important part of Islam, we need to go back to the very beginning  610 AD to be precise.
•      This is the year, in which an Arabian man named Muhammad meditated in the cave of Hira, located in the Jabal and Nour mountain close to Mecca. 
•      Angel Jibril visited Muhammad while he was meditating, angel revealed the first words of what would later be known as the Quran. The angel told Muhammad that these words came directly from Allah and he is the one and only god. 
•       At that time in Arabia, it was common for people to worship several different gods, but the angel told Muhammad that Allah was the only, all-knowing, true god. 
•       The first Ramzan for Muslims happened to be in march, a spring month in which temperatures in the Arabian peninsula including medina were milder compared to summertime when intense hot weather hits both desert and urban areas. 

”O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was for those before you -so perhaps you will become mindful of Allah, ”Said the Quran”, instructing Muslims to fast as other believers of god who preceded them did in previous times.

•        These verses were revealed to prophet Muhammad in February 624 BC, or in the month of Shawwal in the second year of Hijrat, according to Kashif Hamdi Okur, a professor of Islamic divinity at Hitit University.
•         While prophet Muhammad and some Muslims fasted some days in particular months in mecca prior to the Quran’s Ramzan verses, fasting 30 or sometimes 29 days straight without any interruption was an extraordinary experience for the first Muslims.
  

        Ramzan brings a lot of blessings and forgiveness from god. Despite the difficulties of fasting, which tests a Muslim physical endurance as well as psychological strength, like the feeling of the huge relief of finishing a marathon running.

       In Islamic thinking, fasting is not just banning yourself from food and drinks but attempting to purify yourself from your wrongdoings. 

RULES OF RAMAZAN:

• •       During Ramazan, Muslims did not eat food or even drink any liquids from sunrise to sunset. 
  •       People with fast usually wake up early to eat a big meal so that they won’t be hungry throughout the day and also those who did not wake up early, have a big dinner before going to bed. It’s important to note that not every Muslim will fast this Ramzan. 
  •      Elders, young children, sick, pregnant, and menstruating people are exempt from fasting.
  •       Some people will donate food and money to the poor if they cannot take fast on Ramzan.

ABOUT THAI PONGAL:

ORIGIN OF THAI PONGAL:

•     Pongal is one of the most important festivals in Tamil Nadu. Pongal is an ancient festival, that begins in the Sangam Age of 200 BC to 300 AD. 
•     It is originally a Dravidian harvest festival. At the time of the Sangam Age, Pongal was celebrated as Thai Niradal in the month of Margazhi.
•     Thai Pongal is the thanksgiving festival to the Sun God and Lord Indra for helping farmers in getting better-yielding crops.

                   

TAMIL HINDU PONGAL FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS IN 2023: 

•     Thai Pongal is a festival which specially dedicated to the harvest and the sun god the farmers. 
•     During the time of Pongal people used to wake up early in the morning and clean their home entrances and put a colorful Rangoli in front of their home and they visit the temple with their family to seek blessings. 
•      Then they cook a sweet dish called Pongal. In a clay pot, they pour milk, rice, green gram, jaggery, species, nuts, and dry fruits. Then first they served it to the Lord of the Sun and then they have it with their family.
  

BHOGI FESTIVAL:

•     The first day of the Pongal is considered Bhogi. This day was when old household things and as well as waste generated particles of agriculture were burnt in a bonfire. 
•     In Tamil Hindu Pongal Festivals and Celebrations in 2023, bhogi is one of the festivals.
•     The bonfire is called Bhogi Mantalu. This bonfire consists of wood and dried cow dung.
•     The traditional way of bhogi is similar to Holika Dahan in the northern parts of India.  
•     People believe this day is the new beginning of their life. The day of Bhogi is also the day when Indra, the God of Rain is worshipped in gratitude for rain that facilitated a good harvest. 

THAI PONGAL OR PERUM PONGAL (OR) SURYA PONGAL:

•      The second day of the Pongal is dedicated to Lord Surya, the God of the Sun. The main tradition on this day is to cook the sweet dish called Pongal under the Sun. 
•     The used ingredients to make Pongal are milk, rice, jaggery, ghee, and nuts. This will be offered to Lord Surya along with some sugarcane, bananas, and with coconut, and other harvest products. 
•     On that day girls take bath early in the morning to draw rangoli in front of their house.

MATTU PONGAL:

•     Mattu Pongal is the third day of Pongal celebrations. It is special for farm animals like cows and bulls. when they are bathed and adorned with garlands. They will be worshipped on that day, which is a day of thanksgiving to the farm animals who helped in harvesting. 
•     And also there is an interesting story was telling about Mattu Pongal. 
•     One day when Lord Shiva sent his bull, named basal to the earth to inform all humans to apply oil on their hair and bathe every day and eat once a month.
•     Basava mixes up the instruction of lord shiva and tells the human to apply oil once a month and take bath and eat every day. Because of basava`s silly mistake, Lord shiva cursed basal that where he would have to help the humans in fields in order to produce food.
  

KAANUM PONGAL:

•      This is the final day of the four-day festival. Being the last day of Pongal, the farmers will celebrate this day in high spirits. People will worship their elders on that day.
•      It is the day for relaxing after the 3 days of festivals. People will enjoy the time with their family and go out with family and friends. 
•      In the villages, the shop owners will give gifts to their employees as gratitude for their good work. 
•      Kaanum Pongal day is also known as Virgin Pongal and is celebrated by unmarried girls. Then some other people will gift their housemaids with some new clothes and some money on that day.

•      Pongal is one of the most popular festivals in India is Pongal and is celebrated widely by the Tamil community across the globe. 
•      As per the Tamil solar calendar, Pongal is celebrated in Thai month. It is a four-day event that is dedicated to the sun god. It also marks the beginning of uttarayan, the journey of the sun northward.

PONGAL IN TAMIL NADU:

PONGAL IN KERALA:

•      In Kerala, the state shares a historic culture with the Chera dynasty. It is celebrated on the same day as Tamil Pongal, but it is a limited state holiday which of the districts are Wayanad, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, and Thiruvananthapuram.
•     One of the largest pilgrimages which are known as Attukal Bhagavathi Temple is located in Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) will celebrate the Pongal. The month of Pongal is the Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham (February-March).
•      A large number of women gather in the streets and they cook together and will offer the pongala to the goddess (Parvati or Durga or Kannaki). Then the people in the streets will be offered free food.

IMPORTANT TRADITIONS OF PONGAL:

     Pongal is the beginning of the uttarayan when the sun begins its northward journey. This means days start to be longer than nights. 

    To celebrate this auspicious event, people clean their houses and surroundings and the whole family takes bath early in the morning and wears traditional attire for the four days festival. Women wear sarees or pavada, and the kolam is an important aspect of the festival. 

PONGAL GIFTS:

     Giving gifts to employees, relatives, family, and friends is also an integral part of Pongal. The gifts given to the laborers for Pongal are called Pongal PADI or Pongal parish. Also one can choose to gift anything, there are some traditional gifts given during Pongal.

HOLIDAYS FOR PONGAL:

•      Pongal is a religious holiday in south India for all students and working people, but also it is not a gazetted holiday in India. 
•      Colleges and schools in those regions remain closed for four days of the festival.

RITUALS FOLLOWED ON PONGAL:

     Rituals of Pongal are people worship the sun on this day and prepare the dish Pongal with rice boiled in milk to consider as a successful harvest season and keep the Pongal to the sun before consuming it. Other rituals include lighting crackers, singing and dancing to folklore, and exchanging gifts with the neighbors.

DECORATION ON PONGAL:

    On this special day, people would hang mango leaves at the entrance, draw rangoli in their homes, and serve food on banana leaves. 

PONGAL KOLAM:

JALLIKATTU:

• 
•      Jallikattu, a popular bull-taming sport, which will be held during Pongal, is taking place in the Madurai district. 
•      Jallikattu is a sport conducted as a part of Mattu Pongal. Bulls are brought to a common place where the rituals take place. 
•      Then the participants have to embrace the bull’s hump and will try to tame it by bringing the bull to a stop. 
•      The participants of the jallikattu have to remove the bundle from the animal’s head to win many expensive gifts like gold, silver, etc., Then he would be considered brave and valourous. It is also known as Eru Thazhuvuthal or Manju Virattu.

VARIANTS AND RULES:

     Vadi manjuvirattu, This is the common category of jallikattu, the bull will be released from a closed space called Vadi vassal and the participants attempt to wrap their hands around the hump of the bull and hold on to it to win the award. This variant is most common in the districts of

Madurai,

Theni,

Thanjavur,

and Salem.

    Veli virattu, In this variant the approach is slightly different as the bull is directly released into open ground. The rules are the same as that of Vadi manjuvirattu. This variant is popular in the districts of Siva Ganga and Madurai.

Vatam manjuvirattu, the bull will tie with a 15 m (79 ft) rope in this variant. A team of seven to nine members can attempt to untie the gift taken which is tied to the bull’s horn. The maximum time period given is 30 minutes. Jalli Kutty is special in Tamil Hindu Pongal Festivals and Celebrations in 2023.

ORIGIN OF THIRUVATHIRAI:

SIGNIFICANCE IN KERALA

•     Thiruvathirai is the star of Lord Shiva on the Malayalam calendar. On this day Goddess Parvati finally met Lord Shiva after her long penance and Lord Shiva took her as a saha-dharma-chaarini which literally means equal partner.  
•     Lord Shiva and Parvati idols are represented in the form of Ardhanarishvara (half male, half female) to the devotees. It is believed that the festival commemorates the death of Kamadeva, who is a god of erotic desire.
•     Thiruvathirai is one of the most important festivals in Kerala like Onam and Vishu. This festival is mainly for women, the unmarried women will take part in fasting on that day to get a good husband.
•     Married women take fast on the day of Thiruvathirai for the good of their husbands and family. A newly wedded woman`s first Thiruathirai is her poothiruvathira.

SPECIAL FOOD OF KERALA ON THIRUVATHIRAI:

•     The fasting women on that day abstain from rice-based foods. 
•     They should have meals like cooked broken wheat and Thiruvathirai puzukku, a mix of tuber vegetables: Chembu, yam, Chinese potato, sweet potato, long beans, and raw plantain cooked with a thick paste of freshly ground coconut.
•      And also they will make a special dessert called koova payasam, a sweet made of arrowroot powder, jaggery, and coconut milk.

DANCE ON THIRUVATHIRA:

•     In Kerala, a special dance takes place on thiruvathira and it is known as Thiruvarthira Kali. 
•    Thiruvathira kali is performed by women on that day with the accompaniment of Thiruvathira pattu telling the love story of Goddess Parvati and her long penance for Lord Shiva`s affection and his might and power. 
•    This movement is executed by a group of dancers around nilavilakku and it embodies the charm and grace of the feminine. 
•     The dance follows a circular pattern accompanied by clapping of the hands and singing. Nowadays Thiruvathira kali has become a popular form of dance for all seasons.
•      In ancient times, women in Kerala performed this dance during festivals and functions at their homes, giving it the Malayalam name Kaikottikali. 
•     This dance looks very simple yet has attractive steps. Thiruvathirai kali is celebrated in memory of Lord Shiva taking Parvati as his wife. 
•     A group of women wears a typical Kerala style dress set mundu and keep jasmine garland in their hair during the thiruvathira kali. 
•      Kaikottikali tells a message of happiness and illustrates the emotions of married women towards their husbands and also for the unmarried women longing for their future partner.
•      Thiruvathira is known as Kerala`s version of Karvachauth. 

SIGNIFICANCE IN TAMIL NADU:

•     During the time of Thiruvathirai in Tamil Nadu, the married women’s will take fast in the daytime. They will eat food before sunrise. 
•     After that they will start their fasting and it is called Thiruvempavai Nonbu. They will complete their fast after witnessing the moon. 
•    Fasting starts before nine days and ends on Thiruvathirai Day, so they will fast for ten days.

THIRUVATHIRAI SPECIAL IN TAMIL NADU:

     They will make a special food called Thiruvathirai Kali made of

DANCE OF LORD SHIVA:

     The night before the full moon Abhishekam is performed to Lord Shiva with the most precious nine gems called Navaratnam in Chidambaram, which includes diamonds, coral, pearls, jade, and emerald In Tamil Nadu the dancing form of Lord Shiva is taken out on procession from all Shiva temple, On the full moon day, the chariot procession also takes place. The important Arudhra Darshan festival will take place at the Chidambaram Shiva temple.

ARUDRA  DARISANAM IN CHIDAMBARAM:

Arudra darisanam is celebrated in a grand manner in five sabhas of Sri Natarajar, 

1.Kanakasabha (Gold) at chidambaram

2.Velli Sabhai (Silver) at Madurai

3.Ratnasabha (Ruby) at Tiruvalankadu

4.Tamrasabha (Copper) at Tirunelveli

5.Chitrasabha (Pictures) at Kutralam

•     During Thiruvathirai 10 days festival was held at Chidambaram. Maha Abhishekam will be done to Lord Natarajar and Goddess Sivakama Sundari for about 3-4 hours at Raja Sabhai. 
•     Also then Thiruvabaranam Alankaram, Rahasiya puja will be performed to Sri Natarajar. Pancha Murti Thiruveethi Ula will be held around 12 pm in the afternoon. 
•      Then after Lord Natarajar and Goddess Sivakami will bless the devotees with Arudra Darisanam and enter kanaka sabhai.

WORLD RECORDS OF THIRUVATHIRAKALI:

•     A 16-minute performance was held on May 2017, of Twenty20 kizhakkambalam is the world`s largest record for Thiruvathirai, and has been adjudged the largest Thiruvathirai ever held with a group of women at the age group of 10-75 participating in that.
•     In Kerala 2500 women’s and children’s performed in it, also a Russian woman and also more than 4500 women from other 20 states took part in this special event.
•     These women were trained by teachers and practitioners. The previous record for the world’s largest Thiruvathira kali belongs to a socio-cultural organization at Dombivil by the Mumbai pooram foundation. 
•     On December 14th, 2013 over 3000 women participated in the Thiruvathirai kali which was held at kochi and created a new world record.

Pradosa Worshiping and Vrata:

• Pradosam is the day for fasting, it’s an auspicious day for Hindu god Shiva. The fasting and vow performed during the period is called “Pradosh vrata“.

 

• On pradosha day one should do a head bath in the morning and do pooja at home or People usually go to temples and worship gods for a healthy life.

 

• People do fasting on this day. During puja one should be chanting OM NAMO NEELAKANTA for Shiva.

 

• In the evening, they should do a head bath again and do abhishekam for Lord Shiva. Pradosha time is from 4.30 to 6 in the evening.

How to Do Monthly Shasti Viratham or How to Observe Shasti Viratham?

 

• Shasti viratham is a famous fasting day for Lord Murugan, Skanda is a son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
• Skanda is a younger brother of Lord Ganesha.
  Lord Skand is popularly known as Murugan, Karthikeya, and Subramanya in the south and North India.
• He is the main Hindu deity among all the Tamil gods.
• Shastri viratham for six days. This Shasti viratham begins in the early morning at sunrise. With getting a blessing from lord Surya Bhagavan we can start our fasting and this fasting will be broken the next day morning with the help of Surya Bhagavan.
• On this fasting, we can visit Subramanya Swamy temple and sing god Murugan songs. But this is not necessary for those who have jobs and schools. They do prayer in the home.

Oru Pagal Viratham: (One Day Fasting)

It means, people who are observing fasting on that day can have their meal one time. You can have food in the morning or afternoon or evening, the time is up to you, but its better to take meal in the afternoon because in the morning you can have milk or fruits. On the night you can drink milk. So that it is known as One day Fasting.

Pal Viratham: (Milk Fasting)

This is a fasting procedure, you can only have the Abhishegam milk which is give from the temple of Lord Murugan.but, some working people cannot able to visit the temple on that day.They can make abhishegam by themselves at home. Boil the milk and add some jaggery and brown sugar in it and keep it in front of Lord Murugan and the fasting observing person can have it. But on pal viratham we should drink the milk only. Other foods are not allowed to eat.

Milagu Viratham: (Pepper Viratham)

This Fasting procedure is little tough, because on the first day of the fasting we can eat one milagu, second day two milagu, third day three milagu, fourth day four milagu, fifth day five milagu, and sixth day six milagu. Eating pepper during this viratham makes our body divine and keeps healthy and gives immunity power to the human body. Should keep the milagu in front of Lord Karthikeya and do some pooja before having it.

Elaneer Viratham: (Tender Coconut Viratham)
