PAZHAMUDIRCHOLAI TEMPLE

   

  Pazhamudircholai Murugan temple is one of the six holiest Murugan shrines referred to as the Aarupadai Veedu. It is the last of the Arupadaiveedu. It is also called the name of Solamalai Murugan Temple.

STORY BEHIND SOLAMALAI:

Avaiyar and Murugan:

•      The legendary poetess of Tamil is known as Avvaiyar. She is the name behind many of the most famous and appreciated works ever written in Hindu folklore. 
•     Her vocabulary and dexterity in the language made her works stand apart, even in the list of many greatest poets. 
•     The great poet Avvaiyar was tested by Lord Murugan here. One day Avvaiyar, was tired and while traveling, so she sat under the shadow of a fruit tree hungry and thirsty, A boy who is sitting under the tree asked her whether she want fruits, when Avvaiyar told him that she did, the boy asked Avvaiyar whether she wanted roasted fruits or unroasted fruits. 
•     The incredible poetess Avvaiyar scoffed silently at the thought of the existence of a roasted fruit and thinks that the boy did not have enough knowledge even about a fruit. 
•     However, she then decided to ask the boy to pick unroasted fruits for her. The boy started to do. Several fruits fell down from the tree and Avvaiyar picked them up and blew on them to remove the sand. Smiling, the boy asked Avvaiyar if she was blowing on his roasted fruits to cool them down.
•     Avvaiyar was shocked and thinks that how a village boy could be playing such an intelligent drama. Blowing on the fruit to remove the sand was indeed poetically comparable to an attempt to cool ”roasted fruits”.
•      Avvaiyar was humbled by the poetic knowledge of the clever boy, she begged him to reveal his true identity, Avvaiyar was shocked to find herself in a divine company and bowed in obeisance. 
•     She then prayed to Lord Murugan to bless her. Lord Murugan shows his infinite grace on her to her endless quest for knowledge.
  

THE HOLY POND:

    Above Pazhamudircholai the holy pond is located and it is called Nupura Ganga. It is believed that the pond is 1000 years old and named Silambaru. 

    The Goddess Rakayi temple is located here. Worshipers of this goddess usually take a holy bath at the Nupura falls. An offering made for the devotees of the Azhagar temple is made from this holy water.

INTRODUCTION TO TIRUTTANI MURUGAN TEMPLE:

    

•      Tiruttani temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to lord Murugan and it is situated on Thiruttani hill, Tamil Nadu. It is also considered one of the six abodes of lord Murugan, which is called Arupadaiveedu and it has 365 steps which represent 365 days of the year. 
•      Sri Vallimalai Swamigal began padi pooja in 1917. At the time of the new year, each step is washed, and also turmeric and kum kum will be applied to it. 
•      This ritual consists of lighting lamps with camphor while singing the hymn thirupugazh. After this, special poojas were performed in Murugan to welcome the new year at midnight.
  

HISTORY OF TIRUTTANI:

•     The king of Kataragam Veddas, King Nambirajan, and his wife prayed to Lord Shiva for a child. Then one day the king found a baby girl in the forest and he took her to his palace and raised her as his own daughter. 
•     Valli grew up as a beautiful girl who is a staunch devotee of Lord Murugan. Valli started loving Murugan even though she had never seen him and made a vow to marry him. 
•     To test Valli, Murugan appeared before her as an old man. In another secret plan, Ganesha appeared as a wild elephant to frighten Valli. Valli was scared and run away to the old man and he rescued Valli.  
•      She thanked him for saving her and asked him to demand anything as a reward. He requested Valli to marry him. 
•      But Valli refused and later Murugan revealed himself to her and she accepted the proposal. So it is believed that the wedding of Lord Murugan and Valli took place in Tiruttani.
  

STORY BEHIND TIRUTTANI MURUGAN TEMPLE:

• •     God of Heavens, Indra gifted his elephant Airavatam as a part of his daughter Deivanai’s marriage dowry to Murugan. 
  •     After the departure of Airavatam, Indra’s wealth was waning. So Lord Murugan offered Indra to take back his white elephant, but he refused to take back the gift that he had given.
  •      Instead, he requested that the heads of the elephant statues in the temple face his direction. Thus, the elephants in this temple face the east, which is the direction of Indra. 

LORD INDRA GIFTS:

•     Indra also presented a sandal stone as a part of Deivanai’s marriage dowry. Sandal paste ground on this stone is said to acquire medicinal value when it is applied to the image of Murugan. 
•     It is believed that it is gifted by Indra. Devotees should not put this sandal paste on their forehead but it should dissolve in the water and consume it as it is believed that, it cures any disease and also only on festival days. 
•     Tiruttani is the place where Murugan shed his anger after destroying the demon Surapadman in Tiruchendur. Shree Rama after defeating Ravana worshipped Shiva at Rameswaram and came to Tiruttani to find peace of mind by praying Murugan.

ORIGIN OF SWAMIMALAI TEMPLE:

•      One day the God Brahma, who is one of the three supreme deities, became arrogant that he considered himself the supreme God as he creates all life on the earth. 
•     He became self – conceited so lord Murugan decided to suppress his arrogance. 
•     The God Brahma came to visit Lord Shiva at Kailasa. The self-conceited Brahma looked down on Lord Murugan thinking that he was a kid. 
•     Lord Murugan realized this and called Brahma and asked him to explain the meaning of the Pranava Mantra and the philosophy of that but Lord Brahma was speechless and could not answer. 
•     So then Lord Murugan imprisoned Brahma and his creating job was affected. Then the devas went to Lord Shiva and requested him the release of Brahma because there will be no more birth on earth if Brahma was not released. 
•     Lord Shiva asked his son Murugan to release the creating god Brahma, after this lord Murugan asked his father what the use of Brahma being the creating god was without knowing the meaning of the Pranava mantra. Lord Shiva is aware of the meaning of the Pranava Mantra ”Om”. 
•     Once the sage Bhrigu was in penance towards the Lord shiva for moksha by placing a curse that whoever disturbs his penance will forget the Brahma knowledge, later Lord Shiva was happy with his penance and placed his hand on the sage bright and woke him. 
•     He was happy to see Lord Shiva and also regrets that his curse will affect the Lord shiva the sage asks forgiveness from Lord Shiva, but the Lord gladly accepted his curse on the sage bright. 
•     So this is the reason why Lord Shiva forgot the Pranava Mantra. Hence, Lord Murugan reached the Pranava Mantra to his father in the place of Swamimalai.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE TEMPLE:

•   Murugan Temple Swamimalai is created with an artificial hill that is about sixty feet height. There are about sixty stone steps, signifying the Hindu cycle of sixty years leading the temple. This temple has three gopurams with three pra harams. 
•    The five-story gopurams on the south side are carved with statues. The pra harams are peculiarly arranged in that the first pra haram is at the base of the hill, the second one is halfway up the hill and the third one is at the top. 
•     A specific feature of the temple is that the lord has an elephant facing his sanctum as his vehicle and not the peacock.

ORIGIN OF PALANI MALAI:

GNANAPALAM AND MURUGAN WENT TO PALANI STORY: 

 

•    One day the celestial sage Naradar, went to see Lord Shiva at Mount Kailash, with a fruit called Gnana Palam. Naradar gave the Gnana Palam to Lord Shiva, he decided to give that fruit to any of his two sons. 
•      Then he told his sons to encircle the whole world and he said that the winner will get the Gnana Palam. His elder son Lord Murugan (Karthikeyan) took his vahanam peacock and started his journey.
•      And his younger son Lord Ganesha explained and summarized that his parents are only the world to him. Then Lord Ganesha encircled his parents (Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakthi) and pleased them with his knowledge. 
•      Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were very much happy with their younger son Lord Ganesha`s act and gave the Gnana Palam to him as a reward. 
•     Lord Murugan came back to Kailash after encircling the world and got angry with this event. So he left his parents and went to stay in Palani Hills. 

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE:

•      The idol of Lord Murugan in Palani was made by the great Saint Boga with a mixture of Navapashanam or the nine herbs. 
•      The great Saint Boga consecrated the Murugan idol and worshipped the god. After many centuries, the idol was damaged and hidden in the forest. 
•       Once Perumal, who is a king of the Chera Dynasty went to this forest for hunting. He became tired and took a rest at the foot of the mountain. He then slept there and Lord Murugan appeared in his dream. 
•       In his, Murugan gave the order to renovate the Idol. Then the king suddenly woke up and searched for the idol. After he found the idol, he renovated the temple and started worshipping again.

FESTIVALS IN PALANI:

THAIPOOSAM:

•      Thaipoosam is the most important festival. Devotees may reach Palani by pada yatra and worship. 
•      Begin with the flag – hosting at Perianayagi Amman Temple, this is a 10 days festival. Kavadi of various types with holy water, sugar, flowers, tender coconuts, etc, will be offered to Murugan at Palani. 
•      On the 6th day, there will be a procession of Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai in the Silver car. 
•      Kavadi dance and rural musical dance will be performed during this day. On the 7th day there will be ”Thai Ther”(wooden car) and thousands of devotees will participate in that also on that ‘‘Chinna Kumarar” goes around in his Golden Car. 

PANGUNI UTHIRAM:

•      Another important festival is Panguni Uttiram and which is celebrated for 10 days. 
•       Kavadies will be carried by the devotees with holy water from sacred rivers. We can see various rural dances like ”Oyilattam, Thappatam, Dhidumattam, Velanattam, Samiyattam” etc along with rural songs during these ten days. 
•      Rural music is an important part of the Panguni Uthiram festival. The main feature of Panguni Uthiram is the offering of ”Theertham’‘ from Kodumudi. 
•       Lord Murugan is given abhisheka with this holy water. On the first day, there will be flag hoisting at Tiruvavinankugi Temple takes place during all 10 days. 
•       Lord Muthukumara Swamy with Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai goes in procession around Palani Hill. 
•      On the 7th day, there is a Car Festival and this will be attended by lakhs of devotees. During this day the lord is given special puja at many ”Mandapas” in the Palani Adivaram area.  

CHITRA POURNAMI:

     This is a ten-day festival that is conducted at Arulmigu Lakshminarayana Perumal, at periyanayaki Amman temple, Lord Mutuhukumara Swamy, along with Valli and Deivainai will ride in the silver car around the temple. 

AGNI NAKSHATRAM:

     It is one of the important festivals of the temple. During the last seven days of Chitirai and the first seven days of the vaikasi the devotees of Lord Murugan will go around the hill on foot, in the early morning. 

VAIKASI VISAKAM:

     At the periyanayaki amman temple, vaikasi visakam is celebrated for ten days. Visagam is Lord Muruga`s birthday star. This festival will be celebrated at all Murugan temples.

KANDA SASHTI:

•      It is a very important festival of Palani. The six days in the month of Aippasi, this is dependent on the story of Lord Murugan killing the demons. 
•      It is associated with Kandhar Shasti, in which the four demons (Gajamugan, Tharagan, Singamugan, and Surapadman)are killed by the Lord. It is believed that observing fast on this day will offset all their sins.
  

THIRUKKARTHIKAI:

•      The Karthigai is a ten days festival, it comes in the Tamil month of Karthigai. On the 10th day of karthigai women, devotees will light lamps and worship Murugan. 
•      This will be done in Tiruvavinankudi, periyanayaki Amman Temple, and Hill Temple. 

MARGAZHI PUJAI:

     During the Tamil month of margazhi, the hill temple will open at 4. A.M. and the recital of Thiruvempavai are done. The recital of Thiruppavai is done at Perumal temple.

BHOGAR SHRINE AT PALANI:

•      It is believed that the burglar lived at the beginning of kali yuga. He created the amalgam of nine chemicals and did daily services. 
•      Bhogar realized the importance of Murugan and conferred with siddhars on the form in which the Murugan image should be installed at the top of the hill. 
•       He is said to have been a rare mathematical prodigy, a diplomat of great caliber, and an expert in the field of medicine. Bhogar shrine rests here and the image of Nava Durga and the Maranatha Siva Lingam worshipped by him and found here.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE TEMPLE:

•      The temple was reconsecrated by the Cheras, the temple is situated upon the Hiller of the two hills of Palani, known as Sivagiri. 
•      Traditional, access to it was by the main staircase cut into the hillside or by the Yanai padhai.
•      The idol of the deity is said to be made of an amalgam of nine poisonous herbs, which form eternal medicines when mixed into a certain ratio. 
•       It is placed upon a pedestal of stone, which the god Subramanya represents in the form he assumed at Palani. The Lord is housed in the garbhagriham, the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, which the deity should only handle by the temple priest, who is a member of the gurukul community of Palani.
•      The walls of the sanctum bear extensive inscriptions of the old Tamil script. The sanctum is a gopuram of gold, with the sculptures of the deity Lord Murugan and gods and goddesses attendant upon him. 
•      In the first inner pra haram around the heart of the temple are two minor shrines one each to Shiva and Parvati. In the second pra haram is a celebrated Shri of Ganapati.

அருள்மிகு சுப்பிரமணியசுவாமி திருக்கோயில், திருச்செந்தூர்:

•     Veera Mahendrapuri was ruled by the demon surapadman, who was the son of Rishi Kashyaba, who was a sage who focused on stringent meditations, and his sons grew up as Asuras. 
•     Surapadman was a sincere devotee of Lord Shiva and he spent most of his time on penance.

    Lord Shiva was satisfied with his penance and gave him a boon which Surapadman asked, that Surapadman could neither be killed nor be defeated by anybody in this world, except the son of Lord shiva who will born without shiva`s unification with any women.

ORIGIN OF THIRUCHENDUR:

•       The boon of Lord Shiva made Surapadman very strong and powerful and he conquered all three mythical worlds. 
•     The Heaven, the Earth, and Hell, and also he take all the devas to prison and tortured them. All the devas were run off to Lord Shiva to take action to relieve them.
•      Lord Shiva opened his third eye and exhale six different sparkles and gave those six sparkles to Agni devan to throw it the Ganga river, through ganga river the six sparkles reached the saravana poigai, the divine lake, and that six sparkles were turned into six babies. 
•     Lord Shiva sent six karthikai hours to take care of those six babies. Later, the divine couple went to Saravana poigai, where the goddess Parvati fondly merged the babies together to become Lord Karthikeya, who protects his devotees with 6 faces and 12 arms. 
•     Lord Aarumugan, which is another name for lord Karthikeyan. He is a master in tactics of war and also he is very much handsome. Then he became the chief commander of the gods. 
•     According to shiva`s order, he marched to Tiruchendur with his army to save the devas from Surapadman. Veerabahu, his lieutenant was sent to meet Surapadman as an emissary before the war, to free devas.
•     As it failed, Lord Murugan declared war. Losing his brothers, Surapadman refused to surrender and the war continued for 5 days. Then the war came to an end Lord Karthikeyan’s Vel killed the asura Surapadman. 
•     At the request of Surapadman, Lord Murugan turned him into a peacock, which became the vehicle of Lord Karthikeyan. Then the devas celebrated the victory in Thiruchendur. 
  

FESTIVALS OF THE TEMPLE:

•      The brahmotsavams in the temple is a 12 days festival, that is twice a year once in Masi and once in Avani. These two annual festivals of the year are the best attractions for thousands of worshippers. 
•     Lakhs of devotees will take place in the Avani festival. The 7th,8th, and 10th-day functions of Aavani are more important.
•     And the important festival is vaikasi visage (May-June), lakhs of devotees will participate in this festival. The procession of Jayanthinathar with Valli and deviance is conducted during the night. Then the other is the Avani festival which comes from August – September.

VOWS AND OFFERINGS:

    The worshippers who have taken a vow will place their offerings during the festival. They undergo severe fast and take kavadi, Palkudam, and offer Abhishekam. 

   Golden chariot procession, Chandana Labanam, Dharabhishegam, and Dharahomam are performed by the devotees to fulfill their vows.

SPECIALITY OF THE THIRUCHENDUR MURUGAN TEMPLE:

    Tiruchendur is the Second Arupadaiveedu of Lord Murugan. This is the only Hindu temple that has no eastern gateway. 

    This is the only temple in Tamil Nadu, where the sanctum sanatorium is below ground level. And also this is the only temple of Lord Murugan located near the sea. This temple is the fourth Hindu temple in Tamil Nadu to get ISO certification. 

OTHER SHRINES:

•     There is a Venkatesa shrine located near northern Prakara, this Vishnu shrine is hollowed out of the rock itself. 
•     When we enter the first Prakara of the temple, we can see the shrine of Kumara Vidanga Perumal. Here Venkatesa Perumal is seen in a standing posture and facing the east. Sridevi, Bhudevi, and Nizha devi are on his side. 
•     Brahma also appears on a lotus from his navel. Pujas will be conducted here four times a day. The outer walls of the shrine have beautified writings with selected hymns of Nalayira – Prabahandhas.
•     Then we can see the 63 Nayanmars and Thogai Adiyars on the left and Dakshina Moorthy on the right. The next three pillars are embellished with the figures of Kasi Swami, Mauna Swami, and Desika Moorthy Swami.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE திருச்செந்தூர்:

•     The Mela-Gopuram of the temple is a massive structure of nine stories. It is about 137 feet above yali mattam, over a ground floor 90 feet long north to south and 65-1/2 feet broad east to west. 
•     It is believed that the gopuram is constructed 300 years ago by Desikamurti Swami, an Odukkath-Tambiran of the Maha Sannidhanam of Tiruvavaduthurai Mutt. 
•     On the nineth storey is fixed a huge bell kadikara nalikai mani. There is a tradition that when this clock struck midday, the call was taken up by a series of bell fries on mandapas said to have been built by the panjalamkurichi family.

SPECIAL VAZHIPADU:

•      Pujas will be performed daily to the deities. The protocol of the daily worship here is known as Kumara Tantram. Eight times pujas will be done to Lord Subramanyar in a day. 
•     Special pujas will be done on the occasional day of Vishakam nakshatra as well as during chittirai Vishu and Aippasi Vishu. 
•     Last Friday of every month the procession of the inner sanctum is carried out, and the uthsava murti is taken on a procession in the outer prakaram, along this his consorts.

HISTORY OF THIRUPARANKUNDRAM TEMPLE:

•      Thiruparankundram is the first abode of Murugan among his six abodes, which is built by Pandyas during the 6th century.
•      There lived a demon king in Veera Mahendrapuri whose name was Surapadman. He was also a great scholar and a devotee of Shiva for many years. 
•     Once he commenced a Tapas to get Shiva’s attention and finally he gained it.  Lord Shiva was impressed by surapadma’s devotion towards him, so Lord Shiva gave him the boons which he asked for, Surapadman became more powerful and started doing immortality. 
•     Surapadman started targeting the world, he wants to occupy all three worlds. He even imprisoned Indra, the king of Devas. Indra then prays to Murugan, who finally killed the demon king surapadman in a long battle.

ORIGIN OF THIRUPARANKUNDRAM:

    After Murugan had defeated the demon king, he successfully released the devas. Then the marriage of Murugan and Deivanai takes place in Thiruvaparankundram, which was attended by the sun and moon after that lord Murugan gets blessings from his parents Shiva and Parvati. 

     It is believed that Murugan worshipped Lord shiva here as Parangirinathar. Here is the only shrine where you can Lord Murugan with his senior consort Deivanai.

FESTIVAL OF THE TEMPLE:

    The most important festival of the temple is the Skanda Sashti festival, which is celebrated during the Tamil month of Aippasi (October – November). 

   Brahmotsavam falls here during the Tamil month of panguni. Karthikai deepam is also celebrated here during the Tamil month of Karthigai by lighting a lamp on top of the hill.

SPECIALITY OF THE TEMPLE:

•     Thiruparankukndram is also called as skandamalai. The temple and its landmark contain the earliest cave temples of Shaivism. 
•     The early Shaivism traditional cave temple at the northern foot of the hill was expanded with mandapas and additional shrines over the 7th to 15th century, including a feeding house, Vedic school, and traditional art performances. 
•     But now this is the major temple known as Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple. It is a major pilgrimage.
•     It is also the place in Madurai, next only to Meenakshi Amman Temple.

2.      The life-sized sculptures in the mandapas of the Nayak period. There is an Aasthaana mandapa finished with several artistically carved pillars. 
3.     One of the towers 150 feet (46m) high seven-tiered Rajapouram at the entrance. The inner rock cut images are made of a single stone. The three leading sanctums Kambathadi Mandapam, Ardha Mandapam, and Maha mandapam are situated at varying elevations.
4.     In front of the Dwajasthambam, a carved Nandi is situated, Mayil and the mouse, which are the vahanas of Lord shiva, Murugan, and Vinayaka. 
5.     There is rock carving of Mahisshasura Mardini (Durga), Karpaga Vinayagar, Andarabaranar, and Uggirar can be seen. 
6.    There is also a water tank outside the temple, where the devotees served the fish with salt and rice. The five water bodies are called, Saravana poigai, Lakshmi Theertham, Saniyasi kinara, Kasi Sunai, and Sathiya Koopam.

STEPS IN THE TEMPLE:

    The flight of six steps is called the “Shadshara Padiga”. Before the Ardha Mandapam, To visit the sanctum sanctorum we need to climb a few steps about 50 approximately.

TIMINGS OF THIRUPARANKUNDRAM TEMPLE:

    The temple opens from morning 5 AM to 1 PM. It opens again in the evening from 4 PM to 9 PM. The temple is open all days of the week. 

   The best to visit the temple is during the month of March and April when a 14 days festival is celebrated in the temple. The victory of Lord Murugan, where he defeated the demon Surapadman, and his divine marriage with Deivanai were celebrated during this festival.

Kumaran Kundru Temple History:

•     Few centuries back, the cow herds who were grazing their cattle in the hill slope, found a damaged idol with different parts around. When they joined those parts together, they found it was a Murugan idol. 
•     After that the elders in the village built a small temple for murugan and started worshiping. After some days a blind stranger visited that place and advised the villagers that worshiping the damaged idol was not auspicious. 
•    So that the villagers have to go for a new idol along with his consorts Valli and Dheivanai.

Festival Days Of Kumaran Kundru:

•    During the first day of the Tamil month of chithirai (April -May) the sun rays fall on the feet of Murugan and it is believed that the sun god worships Murugan.
•    On that day devotees start coming to the temple on the previous night itself and do Bhajaans to see this rare sight in the morning. Giri valam also performed during Thaipusam.
•    When the temple is pulled all the communities are invited to join that without any discrimination. 
•    In panguni uthiram festival, theertham is brought from Kodumudi. It is will kept on Manneeswarar temple Annur later it will brought here for abhishekam. 
•    A belief of devotees is that people who are suffering from mental issues will be brought here and the darshan of Lord Murugan will cure them.

Shivan And Parvati Shrine at Kumaran Kundru:

•     Shiva and Parvati are also present here as Vaitheeswaran and Thaiyal Nayaki and their shrines are on the side of the Murugan Shrine with separate vimanam.
•     There are also separate shrines for Vinayagar, Navagrahams, Veerabahu and Arunagirinathar and Hanuman. This is also the only place where there is a separate shrine for Pulipani Siddhar. Which is located near the thorana vasal. This Kumaran Kundru Temple is also Known as Kalyana Subramanya Swamy Temple. 

Location Of Kumaran Kundru Temple: 

•     This place is located around 30 kms from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam Road. There is a thorough road to the temple from Karamadai. It is a small hillock on the top of the temple which is SHRI KALYANA SUBRAMANYASWAMY. 
•    The hill is very easy to climb which is hardly 100 feet in height. It is believed that Subramanya swamy himself was present here.
